Kara Manke is a Ph. D student studying Physical Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In her graduate work, she uses high-frequency sound waves to study the properties of complex materials, including viscous liquids and nanostructured composites. She loves to write both fiction and non-fiction, and in 2014 completed a AAAS Mass Media Fellowship at National Public Radio. She has also served as a lead organizer for the Communicating Science Conferences (comscicon.com), a series of science communication workshops for graduate students.
