Betsy Mason

Betsy Mason is a freelance science journalist, co-author of All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey (National Geographic, 2018), and a former Knight Science Journalism fellow at MIT (2015-16). She is currently an Alicia Patterson Foundation fellow researching and reporting on how the science of animal behavior and cognition is changing the way we think about other animals. Previously, she worked as senior science editor at WIRED and was an award-winning science reporter at the Contra Costa Times in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a graduate of the Science Communication Program at UC Santa Cruz and has written about science and cartography for publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, Nature, Science, and Scientific American. Before becoming a journalist, Betsy was a geologist, and has a master’s degree in geology from Stanford University.
